Background: Proper management of hospital waste is crucial for maintaining public health and ensuring biosafety. Given the importance of personnel in this area and the need to evaluate the current situation, this study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of staff at Imam Ali Hospital in Sarayan, Iran, regarding hospital waste management.
Methods: This study employed a descriptive-analytical cross-sectional approach. Descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, and frequency were utilized to summarize the data. The Spearman correlation coefficient, Mann-Whitney U test, and Kruskal-Wallis test were employed to explore relationships and differences between groups.
Results: The mean scores for KAP were 10.43 ± 2.14, 38.39 ± 5.28, and 8.66 ± 2.87, respectively, indicating moderate levels across all domains. A significant positive correlation was observed among KAP, with the strongest correlation identified between knowledge and practice (r = 0.702, p < 0.001). However, awareness of the national medical waste management law was notably low (31.9%). Participation in training programs was associated with significantly higher knowledge and practice scores (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The present study demonstrates that hospital personnel possess a reasonably acceptable level of knowledge and attitude towards waste management. The study also highlights the significant relationship between knowledge and practice, as well as the positive influence of training courses on both.
